We're supporting the launch of the "Mangrove Breakthrough", announced Today at COP27 by the Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA) in collaboration with the UN Climate Change High-level Champions.
The Mangrove Breakthrough represents a concerted effort to address the threats facing mangroves and to promote their conservation as a vital component of climate action. The initiative seeks to mobilise financial resources, secure commitments, and foster collaboration to ensure the long-term survival of these critical coastal ecosystems.
The initiative calls for governments, private sector entities, and non-state actors to collaborate in securing the future of over 15 million hectares of mangroves globally by 2030, supported by $4billion of sustainable finance. The focus areas include halting mangrove loss, restoring recently lost areas, doubling global mangrove protection, and ensuring long-term financial sustainability for existing mangroves.
“We are delighted to be supporting the Mangrove Breakthrough, to galvanise the efforts of organisations and governments with a common focus: to re-allocate capital in support of a nature-based solution that can deliver unparalleled value to coastal economies and their climate resilience.”
